Doctor Henry Marsh

A must see documentary is "The English Surgeon" about Dr. Henry Thomas Marsh a neurosurgeon, who primarily works for the NHS in the UK.
See the Q&A with director Geoffrey Smith, and also a speech by Henry Marsh focusing on the problems of the medical systems in the Ukraine, but he also mentions many other countries for comparison.

August 2011

Happy August the first.! A holiday here in Canada clouded in mystery; here in British Columbia; they call it BC Day, but other parts of the country add their own twists and turns to it.  Officially it is a Civic Holiday, but its roots go back to Emancipation Day.   I am now totally confused as much as you probably are by now, I think, I need a Shrink.

Too many talking heads, warping the meanings of holidays. And speaking of talking heads;
Over three nights at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood in December 1983, Jonathan Demme filmed Talking Heads' - Stop making sense.

PsychoKiller
Found a Job (Live at Entermedia Theatre, 1978) (Not in the show, but released with the album; originally in the album; "more songs about buildings and food")
Making Flippy Floppy (from the "Talking in tongues" album) (Not in the show, but included in the album)
Crosseyed and Painless (Live in Rome 1980, version) (Not in the show, but included in the album)

Jewelweed; Impatiens capensis; is a local introduced invasive plant.
But I found out that it is also useful as a bug repellent, and helps to greatly reduce the skin irritation from Poison Ivy; which thankfully, is extremely rare here in B.C.  One - Two - Three - Four - Five - Six - Seven

May gleanings

At one time there was a lead-zinc mining operation at Pine Point in the Northwest Territories which operated from 1962-1988, a one-company town was built which at its peak contained 1,200 residents. At the end of mining some homes were moved, but most of the town was totally destroyed. A former resident has a website Pine Point Revisited , which inspired some artists to create Welcome to Pine Point, an interactive and artistic documentary, produced by the National Film Board(NFB).

Politics can be ruthless, especially on the web. Jane Corwin registered her own site using the com domain; but forgot to register the org domain. So guess what?
somebody registered the org domain and created a parody website, mimicking the official website. Great fun!

Jerry Seinfeld has his own website, a strange place indeed.!

This free mobile app uses visual recognition software to help identify tree species from photographs of their leaves.
Leafsnap contains beautiful high-resolution images of leaves, flowers, fruit, petiole, seeds, and bark. Leafsnap currently includes the trees of New York City and Washington, D.C., and will soon grow to include the trees of the entire continental United States. ( This could become a very useful tool ! )

Monkey me

Monkey me

Some of the things that keep me out of trouble

I am involved in numerous environmental groups throughout the Tri-Cities area, I manage the Hoy Scott Watershed Societies,(HSWS) salmon hatchery, and keep the volunteers up to date with a Blog
I am also involved with the Maple Creek Streamkeepers,(MCS).

I have an interest in the history of British Columbia, especially the preservation of the Riverview Hospital site.
Which includes the rebuilding of Finnies Garden with a dedicated group of volunteers.
I love the history and ecology of Minnekhada Park, and have done extensive research on its previous owners.
The elusive, though extensive history of the Pitt River which includes Pitt Lake and the Upper Pitt River is slowly being gathered together, for a future book. Much of this area now includes the Pinecone-Burke Provincial Park, which another group that I am involved in the Burke Mountain Naturalists,( BMN ) worked hard to create for future generations to enjoy.
I like to hike around the area taking pictures, here is a small portion of them in Panoramio and also Flickr

Patricia Gaspar, is a dear, artist friend who has a Blog with a small portion of her work.
. Some of the history of the Coquitlam area, I share in my Coquitlamites Blog.

And I really like the music of Eva Marie Cassidy
